Maxen Castle

On 15th June 2013, a third medallion was placed in an authentic Schumann commemorative place along the Robert and Clara Schumann commemorative path in Dresden and surroundings, an initiative created by the Saxon Vocal Ensemble and constantly pressed ahead with by Mrs Brückner. After the ceremonial mounting of a medallion both at the Great Garden Palace and at Cosel Palace, a third medallion was put up on 15th June 2013 within the scope of a Country Outing, part of this year’s tribute to Robert Schumann themed Wagner & Schumann, at Maxen Castle, place of refuge and of inspiration to the Schumanns during their time in Dresden.

This medallion also, again designed by the artist Einhart Grotegut, owed its creation and mounting to initial funding by the municipality, a donation campaign by the Friends’ Association of the Great Garden Palace, and other donations. In Maxen, this lieblicher Ort [“lovely place”] (Schumann), the composer was working on the Liederalbumfür die Jugend ["Song Album for Youth"] Op. 79, which he completed in Dresden, on the six fugues on B-A-C-H [B flat, A, C, B natural], and on chamber music works. Here, both artists experienced the hospitable home of the Serre family among like-minded people, enjoyed nature on extended walks together with their children and, during the May Uprising in Dresden in 1849, found refuge in the castle.
