Robert and Clara Schumann commemorative path

The Saxon Vocal Ensemble would like to mark with a medallion and references to the respective artistic and biographical event each place of residence and of action of the Schumanns along a Robert and Clara Schumann commemorative path in Dresden (Great Garden Palace, Cosel Palace and Hotel de Saxe) and surroundings (Maxen Castle and the Church of Kreischa).

The mounting and unveiling of the first medallion at the west gate of the Great Garden Palace on 10th June 2012 was accompanied by a performance of Robert Schumann’s great oratorio “Das Paradies und die Peri” [“Paradise and the Peri”] at the Great Garden Palace, within the scope of the 2012 Dresden tribute paid to Schumann. The unveiling of the memorial was scheduled for 19 h, and the concert given by the Saxon Vocal Ensemble started at 20 h. The medallion at the Great Garden Palace reminds of the premiere of “Fausts Verklärung” [“Faust’s Transfiguration”] from the “Szenen aus  Goethes ‘Faust’” [“Scenes from Goethe’s ‘Faust’”] by Robert Schumann at the Great Garden Palace on 29th August 1849, which took place within the framework of the commemoration ceremonies on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Goethe. At that time, the composer conducted himself the Dreyßig Choral Society, his own Association for Choral Singing, as well as soloists of the Saxon Court Opera and Court Orchestra.

The Dresden painter, graphic designer and architect Einhart Grotegut has taken on the artistic realisation relating to the manufacture of all the medallions scheduled.

Given that the commemorative path is financed almost entirely through donations, these are welcome indeed!
