Since 1851, Josef Hellmesberger was professor of violin at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music and for long time also director this institution. From 1850 to 1859, 1870/71 and 1877/78 he was also artistic director of the Society of Friends of Music, with which the conducting of the concerts organized by the society was connected. Since 1860, he was also concertmaster of the Court Opera and the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1877 he was appointed bandmaster. Robert Schumann made acquaintance with Hellmesberger during his stay in Vienna in 1838/39, when he met with him and also with Franz Grillparzer on the occasion of a concert. From 1856 onwards, Hellmesberger was frequent chamber music partner of Clara Schumann at the concerts she gave in Vienna.
