More than 20 years after the inauguration of the funerary monument for Robert Schumann at the Old Cemetery in Bonn, another monument was erected in 1901 in Schumann's native town of Zwickau for the most famous son of the town. The sculptor won for the execution, Johannes Hartmann (1869 - 1952), created a large true-to-life figure with a melancholy air that reminds most clearly of the daguerreotype made by Clara Schumann in Hamburg in 1850, or the charcoal drawing made posthumously by Eduard Bendemann, as well as the prints made after both of them, whilst the relief image at the funerary monument in Bonn cannot deny the strong influence of the Schumann relief by Rietschel of 1846.
