Schumann, 1850
Robert and Clara Schumann
Daguerreotype by Johann Anton Völlner, Hamburg, March 1850
RobertSchumann House in Zwickau
This studio work of the two Schumanns was also the prototype of a steel engraving made after Robert Schumann's death, which was sold in 1859 via publisher J. Schuberth& Co., Leipzig, Hamburg, New York, in which, however, Robert Schumann's facial expression seems to be far more friendly compared with the present original. (I.B)
Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856), at the age of 40
Daguerreotype by Johann Anton Völlner, Hamburg, March 1850
RobertSchumann House in Zwickau
One of the two daguerreotypes which Johann Anton Völlner made of Robert Schumann on his own. On the other picture, Robert Schumann is also sitting on a chair in the photographer's studio, but with his hands folded on his chest. The picture displayed here, featuring the typical melancholy air with the head supported by the hand, became the prototype of the famous charcoal drawing by Eduard Bendemann, made three years after Robert Schumann's death as a counterpart to a charcoal drawing by Clara Schumann.
