Franklin Taylor was living as a popular pianist and teacher in London, but he studied from 1859 to 1861 at the Leipzig Conservatory with Plaidy and Moscheles. In 1863 he traveled to Paris and took lessons with Clara Schumann. He was an enthusiastic supporter of her play and later most probably met frequently with her in London during her numerous visits. Taylor was principal teacher of piano at the 1882 newly founded Royal College of Music in London. He also worked as a journalist and wrote many articles for Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians, including an article on Clara Schumann's piano playing and her compositions.
