Following the foundation of the Beethoven House Society in Bonn in 1889 and the project of making Beethoven’s birthplace available as a memorial to the public and of engaging extensively in the life and work of Beethoven both academically and artistically, an intensive collecting activity was initiated which continues down to the present day. Today, the Beethoven House has the most comprehensive and versatile Beethoven collection worldwide, which is freely available via the Internet (www.beethoven-haus-bonn.de). In addition, the collection also comprises autographs by other persons who either had a personal relationship with the composer or otherwise played an important role in the reception of his works. Amongst the latter were Robert and Clara Schumann.
