The Robert Schumann Society in Frankfurt am Main was founded on 6th July 1956, a few days before the centenary of Robert Schumann’s death, and thus celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006.

There had always been a special relationship between Frankfurt and Robert Schumann’s family and, above all, Clara Schumann’s ties to this town were very close. She not only gave frequent concerts in Frankfurt but also lived there from 1878 through to her death and was also the first piano teacher at the Hoch Academy of Music. Building upon this connection, the Robert Schumann Society in Frankfurt am Main was founded.

The objective of the Society is to cultivate the musical legacy of Robert Schumann, to awaken an understanding and the love of his music and to acquaint the listeners with contemporary music in his spirit. The Robert Schumann Society saw one of their major tasks from the beginning in promoting young artists.
Each year, during the months of September through to March, six chamber concerts are organised at Villa Bonn* at Siesmayerstraße 12 in Frankfurt (near Palmengarten) in rooms that are particularly suited for the purpose. The concerts, taking place away from the sensational undertakings of the large concert organisers, are well attended and those responsible for the Robert Schumann Society appreciate above all the large number of young auditors as a particularly gratifying response to the qualified artists and interesting programmes. Admission to the concerts is free, although donations are always welcome.

After each concert, over a common dinner which not only members but all guests are welcome to join, an opportunity is given to spend a hours together with the artists.
