‘Anything that happens in the world affects me: politics … literature, people,’ wrote Robert Schumann to his beloved Clara Wieck in 1838. The monumentally gifted young musician absorbed impressions formed in life and gave them profound expression in his compositions. Susan Bullock’s recital explores the multilayered impulses and complex emotions at work in Lieder, mélodies and songs by Schumann, Debussy and Britten.
